Buffer Alternatives in 2026: When Per-Channel Adds Up

Buffer charges $6 a channel a month on Essentials and $12 on Team, with a free plan for 3 channels. On a small setup that’s hard to beat. The alternatives start to make sense once you post to more networks, need approvals, or want what Buffer doesn’t do at all: direct messages, comment-to-DM and social listening.

Kadenzo is ours, and it’s one of the picks below, so keep that bias in mind. We wrote the same post in both tools and read Buffer’s prices from the plan screen inside its app.

The short answer

If you post to 3 channels or fewer

Stay on Buffer

Buffer’s free plan covers 3 channels, and Essentials costs $6 a channel. Nothing here beats that for a small setup.

If you post to 4 or more networks, or want DMs

Kadenzo

A flat plan from $19 with comment-to-DM and listening, which Buffer doesn’t offer at any price.

If you need LinkedIn Pages or a wide comment inbox

Stay on Buffer

Buffer posts to LinkedIn Pages and answers comments on X, LinkedIn, TikTok and Mastodon. Kadenzo doesn’t.

Where the lines cross: 4 channels

Buffer’s price climbs with every channel you connect. Kadenzo’s steps up only after 5 and 15 accounts. Below 4 channels Buffer costs the same or less; from 4 on, a flat plan wins.

The free plan

What Buffer’s free plan covers

It’s a real free plan, and plenty of creators never need more. These are the limits you meet first, and the one surprise when you upgrade: the three free channels become paid ones.

What Buffer doesn’t do

Three jobs you’d need another tool for

Buffer is a scheduler with a comment inbox. These gaps are stated in its own help center and blog, not inferred.

Direct messages

Buffer

Its help center says Buffer “does not offer direct messaging”.

Kadenzo

An inbox for Instagram and Facebook DMs, next to comments.

Comment-to-DM

Buffer

Buffer’s own blog calls its method “a fast manual workflow” and points to separate DM tools for automation.

Kadenzo

Comment a keyword, get the link by DM, on every plan (500 people a month on Starter).

Social listening

Buffer

Buffer’s help center says it doesn’t offer social listening. Its Mentions tab (beta) shows @mentions of your own handle.

Kadenzo

2 to 15 keywords on X, Reddit, Bluesky, Threads, YouTube, Hacker News and review pages.

Long YouTube videos

Buffer

YouTube Shorts only.

Kadenzo

Shorts and long-form videos.

Our test

One post for X and Instagram, written in both

On October 19, 2026 we connected the same X and Instagram accounts to Buffer’s free plan and wrote the same caption in both tools, stopping before Schedule. Both took about six steps, so we make no speed claim; the differences are in the options.

The Instagram version

Buffer

Post, Reel or Story, first comment, collaborators and a live preview.

Kadenzo

Accounts picked at the top, one caption for both, and the Instagram preview beside it. First comment, collaborators and the AI label are one click away.

A thread on X

Buffer

Start Thread works on the free plan, one scheduled thread at a time.

Kadenzo

One switch turns the post into a thread, previewed beside it, and a button splits a long draft into posts.

Picking a time

Buffer

The next queue slot by default, or a set date and time.

Kadenzo

Three suggested times for the day, repeat, and the queue. An approval checkbox joins them once the team has an approver.

What reviewers say

Easy to use, with posts that sometimes don’t go out

Reviewers praise how simple Buffer is. The low scores are mostly about reliability, not price or billing.

G24.3

1,041 reviews

Trustpilot4.0

135 reviews, 39% one star

Recurring themes in the low scores

  • Failed posts. The most common complaint in recent one-star reviews on Trustpilot.
  • Thin analytics. G2 reviewers ask for deeper reporting; Buffer’s help center says Insights has no best-time view or demographics yet (the queue does suggest times).
  • Cost at scale. Reviewers note that per-channel pricing adds up past ten accounts.
  • Disconnected accounts. Channels that need reconnecting.

Praise centres on ease of use, scheduling and the free plan. Billing complaints are rare.

Honest verdict

Stay on Buffer, or switch?

Pick Buffer if

  • You post to 3 channels or fewer and the free plan covers you.
  • You publish to LinkedIn Pages, Google Business Profile or Substack Notes.
  • You answer comments on X, LinkedIn, TikTok or Mastodon from one inbox.
  • Several people need their own logins and roles (Team plan).
  • You want a simple tool that’s easy to cancel and refund.

Pick Kadenzo if

  • You post to 4 or more networks and the per-channel bill keeps growing.
  • You want comment-to-DM without paying for a separate DM tool.
  • You want brand and competitor mentions next to your calendar.
  • You post long YouTube videos, video carousels or to Telegram.
  • Clients approve posts, and you don’t want to pay for a seat for each of them.

Buffer alternatives sized to how many channels you run

We haven’t tested these hands-on. Starting prices come from each vendor’s public pricing page, checked on October 19, 2026, for vendors that publish one. Find the band that matches your channel count.

1 to 3 channels

Buffer’s own free plan already covers 3 channels, so the tools worth a look at this size are the ones that also have a free tier and bill per account or per set.

4 to 10 channels

This is where a bundle starts to beat $6 a channel: Metricool’s Starter covers 5 brands, a Later set holds 8 profiles, SocialBee’s entry tier 5 and Sendible’s 6.

More than 10 channels

Buffer’s own rate drops from the 11th channel, so compare against that. Vista Social’s entry plan includes 15 profiles and Hootsuite lifts its 10-account cap above Standard; Sprout bills per seat and its entry plan covers 5 profiles, so check the tier first.

Per account or channel, like Buffer

Cheap at the start, then every new profile adds to the bill.

Per brand or social set

Each brand comes with a bundle of profiles, so adding networks for the same brand costs nothing.

Flat tiers with a profile allowance

One price covers a set number of profiles and usually several users.

Per seat

Bigger suites that bill for every person on the team.

Buffer alternatives: common questions

How much does Buffer cost in 2026?

Buffer charges per channel. Essentials is $6 a channel a month on monthly billing, or $5 billed yearly. Team is $12 or $10. From the 11th channel each extra channel costs less. The free plan covers 3 channels.

Is Buffer’s free plan enough?

For 3 channels and light posting, often yes. It holds 10 queued posts per channel at a time and 1 scheduled thread, with 1 user, no first comment and no analytics export.

Do I pay for the free channels when I upgrade?

Yes. Buffer’s pricing FAQ says that once you upgrade, every connected channel is billed, including the three that were free.

Can Buffer send DMs or automate comment replies?

No. Buffer doesn’t offer direct messages, so it has no comment-to-DM. Its comment inbox lets you reply to comments by hand, with AI suggestions.

Does Buffer have social listening?

No. Buffer’s help center says it doesn’t offer social listening. A Mentions tab in beta shows @mentions of your own handle on X, LinkedIn and Instagram.

Is Kadenzo cheaper than Buffer?

Not on small setups. Up to 3 channels Buffer Essentials costs the same or less, and its free plan costs nothing. From 4 channels on monthly billing, Kadenzo’s flat plans cost less, and they include comment-to-DM and listening.

Does Kadenzo post to LinkedIn Pages?

No. Kadenzo posts to personal LinkedIn profiles only. If Company Pages matter to you, Buffer handles them.

Leaving Buffer

How to move off Buffer without losing posts

Cancelling is easy. The thing to watch is that disconnecting a channel deletes its history.

  1. 1

    Export analytics before you downgrade

Insights exports (CSV, Markdown, PDF) need a paid plan, and the free plan shows only 30 days of history. Download what you want to keep while you’re still paying.

  2. 2

    Copy your queue, then disconnect

Buffer’s help center says disconnecting a channel deletes its posts and analytics for good. Copy queued posts out first; Buffer’s API can list them if there are many.

  3. 3

    Recreate the queue in Kadenzo

In Kadenzo, a CSV import (Professional and up) brings in each post’s text, its networks and its send time. Attach images and videos after the import.

  4. 4

    Set up comment-to-DM

Buffer has no DM automations, so nothing carries over. Pick a template, set the keyword and the link, and it answers on every post.

  5. 5

    Cancel in Buffer’s billing settings

It’s self-serve, and the plan runs to the end of the period. If you started a yearly plan less than 30 days ago, you can ask for a refund.
