Instagram Link in Bio Not Working? Find the Fix by Symptom
October 6, 2026 · 7 min read · by Jan Oršula
When an Instagram link in bio isn't working, it's almost always one of three problems. If the link shows as plain text, it's in the wrong field: only links added under Edit profile > Links are tappable. If Instagram refuses to save it ("link not allowed"), the URL or its domain has been flagged. If it saves and looks fine but breaks when someone taps it, the problem is the page itself or the way Instagram's built-in browser opens it. Start with what you actually see, because each symptom has a different fix. The table below gets you to the right section in a few seconds.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| The link shows as grey text, nothing happens on tap | It's typed into the Bio text, not the Links field | Symptom 1 |
| Instagram won't save it, or says the link isn't allowed | The URL or domain is flagged | Symptom 2 |
| It saves, but tapping shows an error, a login screen or a blank page | The page, or Instagram's in-app browser | Symptom 3 |
| Followers still see your old link | Cache on their phone or yours | Symptom 3 |
Symptom 1: the link isn't tappable
The bio text box doesn't create links. You can type a full web address into it and it will display, but as plain text that nobody can tap. This is the single most common reason a bio link "doesn't work", and the fix takes a minute:
- Open your profile and tap Edit profile.
- Tap Links, then Add external link.
- Paste the full URL, including
https://, and give it a title if you like. - Save, then delete the address from your bio text so it isn't shown twice.
Every account type (personal, creator and business) can add up to five links this way. Your profile shows the first one, followed by "and 4 others" if you add more, so drag the most important link to the top. Instagram's help page on adding a website to your profile walks through the same steps.
While you're there, check the URL itself. A missing letter, a space at the end, or an emoji pasted right against the address is enough to break it. The safest habit is to copy the address straight from your browser's address bar rather than typing it.
Your bio text still matters: it's what tells people why they should tap. A line like "New spring menu, link below" earns more taps than a bare link. Our guide to writing a social media bio covers that part.
Symptom 2: Instagram won't save the link
If you get an error when you save, or the link disappears straight after, Instagram has refused the URL. Meta checks profile links against its Community Guidelines and spam rules, and the reasons a link gets refused fall into a few groups:
- The site is flagged as unsafe or spammy. Pages Meta has linked to phishing, malware, adult content or spam are blocked on its apps.
- The link hides where it goes. Meta's spam rules target deceptive redirects, so a link that bounces through several redirects before reaching the page is more likely to be refused. If a shortened link fails, try the full address.
- The domain is shared with other people's pages. On a link-in-bio service, a URL-shortener or a free website builder, your page sits on the same domain as thousands of others. If that domain gets flagged because of someone else's page, your link can go down with it.
How to fix a blocked link
- Test the exact URL. Paste it into Meta's Sharing Debugger. It's a Facebook tool, but Meta's apps share their link checks, and when a URL is blocked the debugger usually shows a warning there, with a link to ask for a review.
- Try the plain address. Remove tracking parameters and shorteners, save
the bare URL (
https://yourshop.com/spring), and see whether Instagram accepts it. If it does, add the tracking back one piece at a time. - Check your own site. If your domain was ever hacked, it may still be on a blocklist. Google's free Search Console will show any security issues it found on your site.
- Request a review through the Sharing Debugger's link, or through Instagram's in-app Report a problem if the error appeared there. Reviews can take days, so put a working alternative in the Links field in the meantime.
If the domain is flagged because of other people's pages, the long-term fix is
a domain nobody else uses. Most link-in-bio services, including Kadenzo's
bio pages, let you connect a subdomain you own (such
as links.yourbrand.com), so other users' pages can't drag yours down.
If Instagram blocks the action of editing your profile rather than the link itself (a message saying you can't do this right now), that's a temporary action block, not a link problem. Our guide to fixing an action block on Instagram covers that.
Symptom 3: the link saves but breaks when tapped
This is the hardest kind to spot, because it often works for you and fails for your followers. The first thing to know is where the link opens. Instagram doesn't hand the tap to Safari or Chrome. It opens the page in its own in-app browser, which has none of the phone's saved logins or cookies. That causes a specific set of failures:
- Pages that need a login. A members' area, a course platform or a booking system shows the sign-in screen, because the in-app browser isn't signed in to anything.
- Links meant to open another app. A link to a podcast, a music app or a shop app may open a web page or a blank screen instead of the app.
- Downloads. A link straight to a PDF or a file may not download at all.
- Some checkouts. Payment steps that rely on saved cards or another app can fail or loop.
Test it the way your followers will: open your own profile in the Instagram app (not your browser), tap the link, and go through the page to the end. If it only fails inside Instagram, the fix is on the page side: send people to a page that works without a login, link to a download page rather than the file itself, or add a short line telling people to tap ⋯ and Open in external browser for that step.
If it fails everywhere, the page itself is down or broken. Open the URL in a normal browser on another device, logged out, to rule out anything cached or signed in on yours.
When followers still see the old link
After you change a link, the old one can keep showing for a while on phones that cached your profile, including your own. Pull down to refresh your profile, update the Instagram app, and if it persists on Android, clear the app's cache in your phone's settings. Logging out and back in also forces a fresh copy. If the old link is still there the next day, check that the edit actually saved under Edit profile > Links.
How to know your bio link is working
The fastest check is a monthly tap-through from your own profile, as above. The better check is data: professional accounts can see link taps from the profile in Instagram's Insights, and if every bio link carries UTM tags, your website analytics will show the visits arriving. A UTM builder adds the tags in a few seconds. Then a sudden drop to zero bio visits tells you something broke, usually before a follower does.
What you put behind the link is a separate question. Once it works, our link in bio strategy guide covers which links to feature and how many.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Instagram link not clickable?
Almost always because it's typed into the Bio text instead of the Links field. Instagram only makes links tappable when they're added under Edit profile, then Links, then Add external link. Anything typed into the bio text stays plain text, however correct the address is.
Why does Instagram say my link is not allowed?
Meta has flagged the URL or its domain, usually as spam, unsafe or deceptive. That can happen because of the site itself, because the link runs through redirects or a shortener, or because the domain is shared with other pages that were flagged. Test the bare URL, check it in Meta's Sharing Debugger, and request a review if you think the block is a mistake.
How many links can you have in an Instagram bio?
Up to five, on personal, creator and business accounts alike. Your profile shows the first link and a count of the rest, so put the most important one at the top. For more than five, or for one page you can share on every platform, use a link-in-bio page.
Can you put clickable links in Instagram captions?
Not on a standard account. Links in captions and comments show as plain text. In March 2026 Meta confirmed it was testing clickable caption links for Meta Verified subscribers, with a monthly limit, so that may change. For now, use the bio links or a link sticker in Stories.
Why does my link open inside Instagram instead of my browser?
Instagram opens links in its own in-app browser so people stay in the app. You can tap the three-dot menu and choose Open in external browser. The in-app browser doesn't share your phone's logins, which is why pages that need you to sign in often fail there.
