Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot a Story?

No. Instagram does not notify anyone when you screenshot their Story. It also doesn't notify for feed posts, Reels, profiles, or Highlights. Screen recording those is equally silent. There is exactly one exception: disappearing photos and videos sent inside a direct message, the View Once and vanish-mode kind, do trigger a screenshot notification to the sender. That's it. Instagram tested Story screenshot alerts back in 2018, pulled the feature after backlash, and has never brought it back. This guide answers each case plainly so you know exactly where you stand.

Stories: no notification

Screenshot or screen-record someone's Story and they get nothing. No alert, no icon, no entry in a hidden list. The person will see that you viewed the Story in their viewer list, but that's the only footprint. A view and a screenshot look identical to them. They cannot tell you captured it.

This is the case people worry about most, and the answer has been stable for years. Instagram briefly trialled a screenshot notification for Stories in early 2018, users disliked it, and it was removed within months. In 2026 there is no such feature, despite recurring rumours that resurface every so often.

Feed posts and Reels: no notification

Screenshotting a photo, carousel, or Reel in the main feed sends no notification either. You can save it, screenshot it, or screen-record it and the creator is never told. The same goes for viewing and capturing a public profile, a Highlight, or a grid.

The one exception: disappearing DM media

Here's the case where Instagram does tell on you. When someone sends a disappearing photo or video in a direct message (content set to View Once or sent in vanish mode) and you screenshot or screen-record it, the sender gets a notification that you captured it. A little starburst or camera indicator appears next to that message on their side.

This applies specifically to ephemeral, self-destructing DM media. Ordinary DM text and permanent photos sent in a chat generally don't trigger it, but the disappearing kind do. If someone sends you a View Once image, assume they'll know if you screenshot it.

Screen recording behaves the same way

People assume screen recording is a loophole. It isn't. Instagram treats a screen recording the same as a screenshot: silent for Stories, posts, Reels, and profiles, and detected for disappearing View Once and vanish-mode DM media. Switching from the screenshot button to the record button changes nothing about who gets notified.

Why third-party "screenshot tracker" apps are a trap

Search this question and you'll find apps claiming to tell you who screenshotted your Story or track who's viewing your profile. Avoid them. Instagram exposes no screenshot data through any official channel, so these apps can't actually deliver. The "results" are fabricated. What they do reliably is harvest your login, spam your account, or charge for nothing.

The pattern to distrust is any app promising data Instagram doesn't publish: screenshot alerts, profile-view tracking, secret-admirer lists.
